Start Here — from install to your first ranked win
A single linear path for brand-new players. Do these in order — each step links the tool on this site that covers it in depth. You don't need to read everything at once; come back as you climb.

1
Install & learn the controls
Get Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, run the in-game Art of War tutorials, then play a couple of games against the Easy AI just to get comfortable building, gathering, and fighting. Don't worry about winning yet.

2
Learn the 10 Golden Rules
These fundamentals apply at every level and matter more than any civ or trick: never stop making villagers, keep your resources spent, always be advancing.

3
Get your economy right
A good economy wins games on its own at the start. Learn how to split villagers across food, wood, gold and stone by age, and which eco upgrades to research and when.

4
Learn ONE build order
A build order is a repeatable opening so you reach Feudal/Castle Age with a real army at a good time. Pick one simple build (Scouts or Archers) and drill it until it's automatic — don't collect builds, master one.

5
Pick a beginner-friendly civ
Stick to one forgiving, base-game civ while you learn (Franks, Britons, Mongols or Byzantines are all safe). The picker's "New? Start here" shortlist explains why, and the quiz flags any pick that needs a DLC.

6
Know your counters
Most losses at the start come from building the wrong unit. Learn the rock-paper-scissors of AOE2 so you can react: skirmishers beat archers, spearmen beat cavalry, and so on.

7
Beat the AI (Moderate → Hard)
Bridge to multiplayer by beating the Moderate AI consistently with your build, then the Hard AI. Hard AI plays roughly like an early-ladder opponent, so once you can win reliably you're ready for real games.

Play ranked & get your first win
Queue 1v1 ranked. You'll start near 1000 ELO and likely lose your first ~12–20 games while the ladder calibrates you — that's normal, not a sign you're bad. Don't smurf; take the losses, keep running your build, and the wins start coming as you settle into your real bracket.
